Meals On Wheels Reflection

Over the summer, I volunteered at Meals on Wheels in SE Portland. I helped with food preparation, served meals and washed dishes. I felt sad for the seniors who can't get food on their own and have to trust facilities like Meals on Wheels to feed them. Meals on Wheels helped me grow in the “Loving” and “Committed to Doing Justice” of the Profile of a Jesuit Graduate. The “Loving” part of the Profile helped me connect with other people who are not as privileged as I am. This opened my heart to people from different backgrounds. The “Committed to Doing Justice” area of the Profile helped me to bring hunger to an end. Hunger around the world is a global issue, and people, including myself are trying to help end it by feeding as many people as possible. …show more content…

While I was working at the front desk calling up seniors to receive food, there was one senior that asked for my name and I told him my name. He then complimented me for my good service and for volunteering at Meals on Wheels. I felt much appreciated about the comment. The story that I would connect from the Bible to my service is the Parable of the Good Samaritan. In this parable, it shows how one Good Samaritan can help change the life of a person. There was a priest and a Leper that walked by a crippled man, but neither did not stop and help him. Unlike the priest and the Leper, a Good Samaritan walked by and helped the man. This is a great example because it represents of how good people can help the hopeless. I would challenge rising sophomores to do this because it helps the people who are marginalized in society. It benefited me by building relationships with others and showing compassion. I learned that some people go hungry because they do not have the money to afford food. I also learned how to be more compassionate to others especially those who are less
