The film “Casablanca” mainly focus’s on a character named Rick, who was an American man living in Casablanca. He’s the owner of a bar with an underground casino that attracts a large variety of different types of people. Throughout the film, it slowly becomes relevant that Rick is in love with a woman named Ilsa and simply can not let go of what passed they had together while he was in Paris. One motif is the song that they both would always mention called “As Time Goes By.” This song was a highlight of their relationship and was played several times in the film and created a connection between Rick and Ilsa. Rick is also constantly watching how far people will go in order make sure they are given a safe exit out, as well as the ones that they love. Seeing all of this makes Rick feel more and more unsure and upset, but at the same time becomes stronger and wiser due to the fact that he was heart broken by Ilsa in the passed. Rick is confident in his mind that he will never see her again and even though he thinks about her all of the time, he knows that she is gone forever but still can not get over what happened for some reason. Out of the blue, Ilsa visits Rick’s Cafe with her husband, Victor Laszlo. At the time, Rick has no idea Victor was the reason why Ilsa abandon Rick in the passed. During her visit Ilsa recognizes Sam, who is the piano player, and she asks him to play the song “As Time Goes By” for old times sake. It is very obvious that the song has some kind of special significance for both Rick and Ilsa. For some reason, out of the blue, Ilsa leaves Rick a note that says she can’t go with him with no reason why. Later in the film she tells Rick that the reason she had a change of thought is because she found out her husband was still alive after believing that he was dead. The song “As Time Goes By” plays during the flashback, which shows that the song is a symbol of their love.
