The Jungle was written in 1906. The purpose of this book was to expose the truth about how the industries treated their workers. Not only did it do that but it also exposed what happened in the meat packaging factories. Many workers would lose a finger or something and it would fall into the meat grinder and it would still be packed and sold. The factories were not sanitary at all. Many of the animals that were used had diseases which could cause many to get sick. The book starts with the main characters Jurgis and Ona. They immigrated from Lithuania to Chicago and they have a wedding feast, which is in packingtown. Ona gets worried because she is afraid they won't be able to pay off everything they owe. So Jurgis promises her that he is going to work very have to make sure everything gets paid off. In chapter two it give more information of who Jurgis and Ona are. It also says why they immigrated to Chicago. They take a walk around Packingtown and notice the smell of rotting animal flesh, poop,and billowing smoke in the air. They also notices children picking in the nearby garbage cans also the land there were field dumps that have now been constructed over. They shows how bad the economy was and how much struggle people were going trough. Jokubas is the one giving them a tour around the town but Jurgis notices that he was a bit sarcastic when talking about the sanitation rules. Government inspectors were supposed to check each animal for tuberculosis before being slaughtered but some got skipped over. Workers usually took the rotten meat in discretion and made sure it went with the other meat to be canned and packed. Later on in the book the family settle. Jurgis also starts workings. Also later on in the book it turns out that the house had other expenses that needed to be paid for and Jurgis had no idea about them until he went to the agent and demanded that he'd tell him everything.Turns out one of the people living with them lost their job, then they got it back but was fired again for two months and that lost income was devastating for the family because Ona also had a baby on the way. It took them a month to find a job, which was as a beef trimmer. Once the baby was born, Jurgis wasn't able to see him because of how many hours he worked and Ona went back to working again a week after giving birth, which made her have some health complications. Later on in the book Jurgis breaks his ankle and he wasn't able to work for about three months. The family knows the nasty secrets about the meatpacking industry, they know that spoiled meat becomes sausage. No one who works there speaks up about the disgusting actions taking place there because that's where all the money they need to survive come from and they cant afford to lose their
