As a new member of the Mechanical Engineering academic discourse community, there has solely been exposure to the academic side through courses taken. With that being said, I got an idea of my discourse community as a whole, but there is still lots of different elements that make up my discourse community and need to be explored more in depth, like the professional side. I already gained some knowledge up to this point in about how Mechanical Engineering ‘s discourse communities in academics are, through the research done from the group presentation. The discourse community presentation was a great way to remind myself about my major, goals, and what I have experienced so far. Meetings are called for the good of the company, with goals to improve the product and save money. The academic side relates by making students realize that it is very dangerous to be just going through the motion. The courses for Mechanical Engineering stresses that just having a laid back attitude will not cut it. That student does not become successful in any area if they do not dig their heels in and really apply themselves. Also mentioning that in the real world there are still lots of Mechanical Engineers who are unemployed, and I see that now thanks to my …show more content…
Terminology is important, because engineering is a field that is always changing. “There is always something new, whether that’s the tools or procedures” (Martinez). There is continuous improvement, as methods change, tools change. The field seems to be filled with new devices such as 3D scanners to create new products. With new tools words just have different meaning, this has to be taken into account. As a lot of job is proofreading and approving new technical drawings, pointing out defects. So far in my academic journey I have learned new terminology with every class. Every word is not just used as a filler for sentences. As I progress I have to notice new terms and their definitions to understand
