This artistic interpretation is based upon the play Medea. Medea is a play about a women with magical powers loses her husband, Jason, for a beautiful princess, Glauce.
Medea goes mad with anger and revenge. She devises a plan to get back at Jason, Glauce, and her father the king. She curses a crown which she sends to the young princess and when she puts the crown on she begins to burn alive terrified her father, the king attempted to extinguish her and ended up dying in the process. The scene is gruesomely described giving a detailed and horrifying image of the death. She then kills her own children in order to spite Jason, just in case the readers weren’t convinced she was insane. The art piece depicts a crown wrapped in a crown of thorns.
