Media Bias and Racism “Multinational corporations have control. They control everything that is put out. They control what goes on and off television, how we think, and the consumption of the material.They are destroying the planet and laying the foundation for violent outbursts and racial division.”(Jerry Brown). In the years 2012-2015, there has been a strange consistency on what gets shown on or off Media networks. The lack of diversity has caused a prejudice outlook on an unconscious level. Racism should be a bigger concern than how it is presently approached because allowing the media to shape our minds into what they want us to believe versus what is actually going on will cause our society to deteriorate as a whole. Living in America, the media is pretty much in an average citizen's day. Which means most americans will spend more than 34 hours a week watching television(David Hinckley). The most frequently watched networks on TV are: Reality Tv, Sitcoms, and the News. In sitcoms, the race card gets thrown left and right throughout most series,ie, Black-ish, Glee, 2 Broke Girls, etc. In television shows like the ones that was last stated are clever in their jokes and comical notions yet, the big picture will always be overlooked. In comedies,the authors tend to lean a lot on stereotypes and racism for a good laugh. Yet, what they unintentionally create in the minds of their viewers can cause a huge strain on society. America's history is filled with racial discrimination and inequality so what better thing for a comedy series to do then turn a tragic event into a comical punchline? As black boys grow up, they are at higher risk of being hyper-criminalized. Even if there was a crime committed by anonymous, the media will view the perpetrator as being black. The media's constant portrayal of black men as criminals corrupt their own minds into thinking so. It doesn’t matter if a person of color attempts to do something good, they will still have some name tag of being bad(Mills). Like the man who saved a 15 month old baby from the highway. He was in fact african American, and in the news report by ABC 12 stated that, “ A former convict saves a 15 month old baby crawling alongside busy highway.” There was no need for the use of the words “former convict”. He was a hero that day, and the media decided to bring up the past of this man to change the way people viewed him(Huffpost).
