How is the rise of social media impacting on the social life & self-perception/body image of young women? This essay will explore in depth the influences social media has on our day to day lives and How it has become the norm that social media networks are the primary source for young people to communicate & their main channel to the outside world. The idea that social media has the impact to inspire young women to chase the illusive dream of becoming somewhat famous, but also the very thing they aspire to could also harm them in the process of doing so. The very same images that are questionable for extortion and seen in some cases as socially unacceptable are the very same images one might find them selves looking at, the appreciation of an esthetic image? The wealth displayed by other people also becomes a coercive force. Society see’s people’s fancy homes and luxurious cars creating envy. Others want what they have, hence the term “chasing appearances”. Society is living in a time where the world is open to the freedom of communication. Where anyone can contact others around the world, at any time, with just a few clicks of a button. But not all consequences of this technology are positive. People seem to allow social media as a way of hiding behind screens and limiting social interaction face to face.
