Ecstasy, The Party Drug Ecstasy, MDMA, Love Drug, Party Pill, and Hug Drug are just some of the names for this drug. MDMA is “a synthetic amphetamine analog with stimulant properties, it appears to exert unique psychological effects in humans, which discriminates it from chemical related substances.” (1) MDMA or better known as Ecstasy was made illegal since it was classified as a schedule 1 drug in July 1985. Even though MDMA is illegal, its recreational use has only increased over the years. This increase has caught the attention of the media and alarmed parents. “MDMA has been convincingly demonstrated to damage brain serotonin neurons in experimental animals. The question of whether the compound is neurotoxin in humans is as yet unanswered.” (1) The psychological effects of MDMA are much greater, for they create a sense of dependence and reliance for the user. Ecstasy is known as a party drug and has made its name known to the young adolescents in society. Ecstasy has an impact on the individual, on the home and social life, and on academics. The impact of ecstasy on adolescents in today’s society would impact my work in various ways. One example of how teenagers experimenting with ecstasy could affect my workplace would be the potential teenager who comes in hooked on ecstasy. I would have to deal with the typical symptoms of ecstasy and know how to work with them to calm the individual down and provide a safe environment to him or her. A second way the use of ecstasy could impact my work could be dealing with a client who has a history with the drug, whether it be someone they know or themselves. Having a good working knowledge of ecstasy and other drugs, would be most beneficial to me in my field. Depending on my place of work I could potentially encounter many clients who have experience with drug use or a family member who abused
