This summer I had the pleasure of interning at WCBD News 2 in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Owned by Media General, WCBD-TV is an NBC affiliated television station for the Lowcountry area of South Carolina. The studio is located in the median of Highway 17 and SC 703. The station broadcasts a high definition signal on UHF channel 50 from a transmitter in Awendaw. Media General is among the nation’s largest local media companies and manages 71 television stations in 48 markets. The corporation engages about 23% of U.S. TV households and 43% of the U.S. internet market. The only principle that the both of them stressed to me was to treat this internship as if it was a real job. My time with WCBD gave me the opportunity to “test drive” my desired career choice. Having this experience helped me to determine where I wanted to work specifically in the field of broadcast. I knew that I wanted to work in the news and television production industry, however I kept questioning to myself “would I be happier in producing or reporting?”. Marketing director Shandra Bohley told me about her work during the earlier weeks of my internship, but I kept confusing it with sales so I just decided not to shadow that area much. She then again told me more about marketing which actually opened my eyes a bit more. Marketing is in charge of branding the station, making it more appealing to viewers. They strive to make components such as then anchors, reporters and news stories look good so people actually want to view them. Marketing producers also work closely with the community to gain insight as to what they want to see more or less. Producers in this department are very creative, they think outside the box as they discover different angles to promote a story. They write creatively using ENPS, edit using Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro and work with motion graphics using Adobe After Effects. I learned that it is easier to produce in marketing than it is in news as the hectic pace and added pressure is absent. Marketing producers still have to be unbiased but they have more opportunities to reach out more, similar to public
