The study reviews one of George Orwell’s novels entitled 1984. Written back in 1949, the novel still continues to bear a strong relevance to our modern society. The novel explains the effects of media when used as a medium for propaganda and mind control. Though purely fictional, the novel elaborates how media per se may become a devastating weapon for the sole purpose of manipulating the minds of society. The study aims to clarify the novel’s relevance to the modern society. Since media is rapidly increasing its power on providing information to the people, there is an impending question correlated to its abuse and misuse. The novel’s satire narrative would pave way to such questions regarding civil rights, security, and privacy. All that given, the study would be of outmost help to all readers so as to recognize how media operates in its entirety. In Orwell’s story, the state is ruled by a powerful entity known as Big Brother. He appeared in the story through posters containing a phrase that says “Big Brother is watching you” which in fact is deemed to be true through the use of telescreens which are installed across the whole country of Oceania. Big Brother puts his trust in the Ministry of Truth for making sure that every citizen would blindly comply with his rules. The Ministry of Truth itself ironically is responsible for laying out well-constructed propagandas and implementing Newspeak to its constituents. The Party believes that language can be used to manipulate the state, thus Newspeak was born.
