Imagine arriving home after a tiring day and all you wish to do is relax. After dropping your things off, you head to the kitchen for something to satisfy your hunger. Yum! There’s leftover pizza just waiting to be melted into a cheesy paradise, and what a better way to enjoy it then flopping down on the couch to watch television. Just as you take a crunchy warm bite of your pizza, a commercial comes on featuring Kim Kardashian, the embodiment of beauty. “Do you feel sexy? Do you have the body you’ve always wanted? You can change the way you look. You have the power to reinvent yourself. Create the body you deserve. No more excuses, just results. How hot can you be? Quick Trim. By promoting Barbie as perfect and lovable, we are taught to model these images in our own lives, encouraging anorexia and unhealthy bodies as the ultimate goal. In fact, I was disgusted to find out that the 1960’s "Slumber Party Barbie,” included a scale permanently at 110 lbs, and a guidebook titled "How To Lose Weight." The only words written in the book was the alarming phrase, "DON'T EAT!." To make it worse, a standard Barbie doll is stated to be 5'9" tall and weigh 110 lbs - about 35 lbs below a healthy weight, putting Barbie in the severely underweight category. Girls aged 6-10 years old were tested to measure their diet in relevance to the dolls they played with. The saddening results showed children who had played with the thin doll eating significantly less food and having a lower self esteem
