Before I began this course, I knew very little about American Indians and their current situations. All I knew before this course was everything I was taught in elementary school. After elementary, I did not learn anything new about their nation, until, college where I realized that American Indians live in harsh conditions. I saw American Indians images and issues in the media as negative because the media never updated the people around the world about their current conditions. I always believed that the media portrayed American Indians in their old ways like they are described in the history books. I define them as people who were born into the American Indians nation or non American Indians who traditionally change their culture and religion into an American Indian tribe. Also, someone who is an American Indian would fight for the whole nation’s rights. At the beginning of the course, I would also define them by their clothes. I taught they wear the same clothing as shown in history books, but after this course I realized that is just what the media presented us with. American Indians do not wear the clothes they have always been shown in. It is a misunderstanding that they have never progressed because they have. They have started to use technology within their nation. Someone who is not American Indian would not be passionate to prove their nation right or get rid of all the misunderstanding the media has created about their nation. I used to have an image of American Indians as tribes with headdresses, makeup, and clothing like they were told to us in history books. Basically, it was the image shown to me in textbooks when I was in elementary school and I carried that image along with me till before this course. But after learning more about American Indians through this course, I realized that they are have been so many harsh conditions and are still in the process to get their rights. They have been misunderstood through media. They do not wear headdresses all the time, they do not wear makeup all the time, they do not wear the clothing shown in textbooks all the time. They have also progressed into the new generation just like the rest of us. They have started to use technology in their nation.
