Together with Transgender Law Center, The GSA Network launched TRUTH, a “national storytelling campaign that aims to build empathy, understanding, and a movement for transgender and gender non-conforming youth and their families to share their stories in their own words and in their own way” (GSA Network 200). TRUTH combines video storytelling with support, guidance, and community-building for youth and their families. It also provides resources for media professionals in order to address the hostility and stereotypes transgender and gender non-conforming youth face. The main aspects of the TRUTH website allow youth to share their own story, search through the Storytelling Toolkit which guides youth and their families through the process of speaking out, allows LGBTQ youth to connect through the #transTRUTH selfie campaign to gain support, and finally educates media professionals on the best practices for reporting on trans and gender nonconforming youth.The TRUTH campaign also relates to what Henry Jenkins described as ‘participatory culture’ where “budding creators can develop their voices and identities as media creators through ongoing interaction with engaged peers and audiences” (Lange & Ito 244).
