The Medicine Hat Girl The Medicine Hat Girl, also known as Jasmine Richardson committed homicide on her father, Marc Richardson, her mother, Debra Richardson, and her younger brother, Jacob Richardson with her boyfriend Jeremy Steinke. At 1:00pm on April 23, 2006, their bodies were discovered upstairs with Jasmine missing. At first, police thought that Jasmine was abducted, but was later found the following day, in the community of Leader, Saskatchewan with her boyfriend. Both were charged with the three murders. She had pled not guilty to 3 counts of first degree murder.(Lee, C.) The trial lasted a bit over a month, and in July of 2007, the jury found Jasmine guilty on all 3 counts. In November, Jasmine was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment, which is the maximum sentenced allowed by the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The act states that any convicts who were under the age of 14 at the time they committed the act cannot be charged as adults, and can be given a maximum sentence of 10 years.(Monacelli, A.) Jasmine’s sentence gave her credit for 18 months of time served, along with 4 years to be spent in a psychiatric facility, followed by 4 1/2 years of conditional supervision in the community. Her boyfriend, Jeremy, was found guilty of 3 counts of first degree murder and sentenced to 3, back to back to back, life sentences in prison. As of September of 2011, she has been released under supervision and enrolled as a freshman at Mouth Royal University in Calgary, Alberta.(Zickefoose, S.) Jasmine is no longer in a relationship with Jeremy and blames him for the death of her brother. She is reported to be gaining ground in therapy and is living in a Calgary group home to be closely supervised and surrounded by others that will help
