As I was younger I always had a certain fascination with Medieval Romances. I think it was mainly the magic or supernatural events. The dragons, witches, trolls, and other monsters. Its not only this that makes up a Medieval Romance. There are exactly four elements that make up a Medieval Romance. These include: a larger than life hero or person, a hero that faces a challenge or test, Exotic settings, supernatural events. My favorite story is “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight”. The proposed challenge is that a knight may take a swing at the neck of the Green Knight but in a year and one day he returns the strike. No one accepts at first so, he taunts them. King Arthur then accepts the challenge. Sir Gawain instead takes the challenge in place of the king. he takes his swing and removes the Green Knights head. This is a part that plays into the supernatural. The Green Knight picks up his head and reminds Sir Gawain of their deal. He then rides off. That part was my favorite part. That is a prime example of supernatural events. Its not normal for a man to pick up his head and carry it. Therefore, there has to be some kind of magic involved. I ask, could you do that? After about a year Sir Gawain knew it was time to face the task. Well he rides off through lots of exotic scenery. Oh wait! Exotic setting is one of the elements needed for a Medieval Romance. The Most exotic setting was at the green chapel. This is where Sir Gawain meets the Green Knight. The chapel is in the middle of the woods and is green. That’s pretty exotic if you ask me. In the end he only gets nicked by the blade of his axe. Read the story to know
