Megan Thee Stallion, born Megan Jovon Ruth Pete, is one of the biggest female rappers in today’s music scene. Known for her style of rap and lyricism, Megan has changed the rap game for future female rappers. She has been very outspoken on the discrimination of Black women, specifically from Black men, especially recently due to an incident where she faced a lot of backlash from Black men. Although a “newer” rapper, she has become a cultural icon for women worldwide due to her refusal to be quiet or submissive in her lyrics. Working with other female icons such as Beyoncé or Cardi B, also known for being strong women, she has cemented herself as one of the tops. Speaking up for women who may not have a voice is her biggest goal and her way of doing this is through her lyrics, but also through her advantage of being a celebrity. In 2020, Megan was shot in the foot by singer, Tory Lanez, someone she thought was a close friend. As anyone would, she spoke out about it, telling her story. This led to a huge movement from men worldwide, shaming her, and accusing her of falsifying the story to ruin Lanez’s career. This still happened even after the footage showed her story to be true and continues to occur now. The demonization of Black women is something that is so common, especially in cases where the woman speaks out about the abuse she has faced. This is why Megan Thee Stallion is so important to Black women because she has become their voice when they cannot say anything. In an interview with Elle, she says, “‘But my heart hurts for all the women around the world who are suffering in silence, especially if you’re a Black woman who doesn’t appear as if she needs help. So many times, people looked at me and thought, ‘You look strong. You’re a good person. You’re tall. You don’t look like somebody who needs to be saved.’ They assumed that, per preconceived stigmas, ‘I didn’t fit the profile of a victim,’ and that I didn’t need support or protection.’”.
