Mission statements are an essential step for individuals growing within their business acumen and for companies in their development. A simple way I like to think of mission statements is that our lives are storybooks, and the mission statement is the title and the description of the book. A good mission statement will outline what somebody hopes to achieve and how they hope to grow as a professional, but often remains rather vague and doesn't go into a lot of detail so that individuals are able to remain flexible and agile with the ever changing business world around them and are able to make changes that will positively impact their future. Meijer is the regional grocery store chain that hallmarks itself as being the pioneer of the one stop shop, and the cornerstone of the communities that they serve. This is reflected in their mission statement which reads, “As the pioneer of the 'one-stop shopping’ concept, we offer excellent customer service, low prices, quality foods and a broad selection of national and Meijer brand items” (Meijer Mission Vision, n.d.). From my time working at Meijer, this mission statement very heavily influenced my future professionalism and belief in myself as an employee. During that time, I developed a sense of wanting to be able to address the concerns of individuals, and if I couldn't, being able to work with them to find who would be able to address their concerns. Meijer is a very customer centric company, and I spend a large portion of my time interacting with customers and working to get to know them to develop personal relationships and rapport. During this time, I established a strong working relationship with my coworkers, supervisors, and the customers I served to ensure that I could assist them with their needs or predict any concerns that may arise. Based off the three mission statements that we've discussed and my own personal values, I would identify the following values as ones that I feel need to be reflected within my own personal mission statement: integrity to act ethically in issues that may arise, adaptability to move with the changing dynamics of my industry, continuous growth to allow myself to both expand my educational background but to overcome personal issues that may arise, efficiency to address any concerns or projects in timely manners and not harm or delay progress, and connections with others to develop meaningful and impactful growth.
