I chose Mel Columcille Gerard Gibson, better known as Mel Gibson, for my report about famous celebrities who have mental disorders. Mel Gibson was born January 3, 1956 in Peekskill, New York. Mel Gibson has had a very successful acting career and has starred in many movies such as Brave heart, The Lethal Weapon series, The Passion of the Christ, and The Patriot. I believe that Mel Gibson has a clinical disorder that is indentified as bipolar disorder and alcoholism. “In a 2002 and 2008 documentary, Gibson himself said that he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.” (Depression-guide.com, 2014) Bipolar disorder is a brain disorder that causes extreme shifts in mood, energy, and day-to-day tasks. Bipolar disorder can cause a person to go into depression which is a very serious disorder where one feels sad, empty, and hopeless. Depression is a disorder that never goes away. Deep depression is very dangerous, it can cause an individual to have thoughts of suicide or even commit suicide. Bipolar disorder can be treated with the right medication, patients must be treated and well monitored by their doctor to insure the treatment plans are working.
