Warriors Don’t Cry, is the story of Melba Pattillo Beals, a 15 year old girl who was among the first 9 black children to integrate Central Little Rock high school after the Brown Vs. Board of Education court case ruled that Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas would be integrated in 1954. Warriors Don’t Cry was written by Melba Pattillo Beals herself, describes her struggles and experiences of not just her year at Central High but also her entire life. Melba being only 15 was the youngest out of the Little Rock nine, had to spend the majority of her teenage years dealing with the abuse of her white classmates. Melba is the eldest child of her parents Lois and William Pattillo.
Melba did not feel safe with the troops and was constantly harassed and attacked by students during school. She was spat on, beaten, called repulsive insults. Teachers and the school administration, did nothing except enabled this behavior to persist, leaving Melba on her own to defend herself. Melba desperately wants to return back to her life before the integration started. She is unable to leave the house because her family is afraid she may be attacked.

When Melba got to Central High she got pushed, kicked, burnt, and almost lost her eyesight. Melba wanted to give up so bad. Grandma India told Melba “ Warriors Don’t Cry”. Grandma India was the main person that helped Melba get through this experience. She let her know everybody had a battle they had to get through.

This book is a great description of the discrimination that colored people endured, for the novel took period during the passing of the Civil War Act, includes samples of Jim Crow, explains a young girl's perspective on colored people, and shows how far colored people have gotten to gaining more freedom. To begin, the Secret Life of Bees took place in 1964, right when the Civil Rights Act was passed. This act abolished discrimination founded on race, religion, sex, etc.

Why do you want to participate in the Bridges Summer Program? Participating in the Bridges Summer Program will help me greatly in the transition between high school and college. Reading about the program I have learned that this program is meant to help students transition to a college-level work environment and I know that I need this type of help. The good thing about this program is that they help students individually and this way students will have a better chance at really being prepared to start college in the fall.
