As Virginia Woolf once said, “I am made and remade continually. Different people draw different words in me. Meaning that your identity is changed by the people you surround yourself with. In the novel “speak”, Melinda has been through a series of situations that has shaped who she is. Some of those situations that helped shape her identity include her home and school.
School, specifically her Principal, shaped Melinda’s character. For instance, “We all agree we are here to help. Let’s start with these grades. They’re not what we expected from you” (Anderson 114). In that section of the novel, the principal is having a meeting with Melinda and her parents to try to help her do better in school. They end up coming up with a contract or deal
