Speak was written in 1999 by Laurie Halse Anderson. The book is about Melinda, a freshman just starting high school. Melinda starts school off with no friends, she lost the ones she had over the summer. A traumatic event causes Melinda to shut everyone out, and not speak to anyone. Growing up usually takes time, but Melinda is rushed into maturity too soon and must help others do the same.
There are people in our lives who have helped us grow. In the summer before freshman year in high school Melinda Sordino was raped at a party. After calling the police she was left without friends or dignity. She isolates herself not knowing what to do. In Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, Melinda grows in many ways throughout the book.
In Laurie Halse Anderson’s novel, Speak, Melinda is a dynamic character whose behaviors, thoughts, and words change and reflect the theme of the novel, not to keep ones emotions bottled up. First, Melinda acts in a shy and quiet manner because she had got her friends into trouble when she called the cops at the party. However when Melinda begins to make her own choicesfor herself and not let her emotions get to her, she realizes she will not let other people make her own descions. This is evident when Anderson writes “I mean no I won`t help you” (Anderson 179). This shows how Melinda will not be walked on by her peers.
This book is about two kids both named Wes Moore and grew up blocks away from one another. Both grew up with no father figure, had a difficult childhood, hung out on the street corners, and ran into to trouble with the law. Although throughout all this trouble the author Wes Moore came out very successful. He was a Rhodes Scholar, decorated veteran, White House fellow, and a business leader whereas the other Wes Moore is convicted of murder and serving a life sentence in jail. It is a fascinating experience to live down the street from someone who shares the same exact name as you and live very similar lives but takes very different paths in life.
Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson is a book about a girl named Melinda Sordino. In the beginning of this book the audience meets Melinda as she is the main character and she describes her first day of high school starting with an assembly. Throughout the book you read about her life but she goes back to the past recalling of something that happened at the end of the summer; in a couple of instances she comes across someone that she refers to as “IT”. When reading you don't know who this “IT” is but it is developed over the story by her having flashbacks to that night or dropping a hint of what happened. Throughout the novel there are many displays and signs of Melinda's depression. Of these signs the three most noticeable include her low self-esteem which is seen in every one of her decisions, habits of isolation/social withdrawal at school and even at home, and self harm. She unveils these signs of depression with every test and challenge she faces.

Her biggest problem throughout the book is to speak up or to tell someone this had happen, which is a common problem in today’s generation of teens.
We tend to pay more attention to subjects in the news that usually relate and have an impact on our lives. I for one, am normally like that. When I saw the list of topics to choose from, I felt like I had a good understanding of all of the topics except for one. Although I did have a base of understanding about sexual assault, I knew there was still a lot for me to learn to truly know the topic. Before diving into the issue, I decided that I wanted to focus on a few specific questions.
People can learn to grow. People don’t stay the same for all of their life. They experience life to grow and change with it. In the book Speak the character Melinda was sexually assaulted and she had to learn how to grow and accept that it wasn't her fault. The people in her life also grew and changed for the better when they knew the real reason she called the cops on the party.

Over the summer her and her friends went to a party and Melinda gets raped by a boy named Andy Evans and ends up calling the police, she didn't tell anyone why she called the police, causing her friends and everyone at the party to reject her. Melinda’s only friend is a new girl named heather. Melinda gets depressed and starts expressing her pain through stuff like biting her lips and her nails, and not talking.
