It can be said that America has made a lot of progress towards freedom and racial equality. In the speech made by president Barack Obama at the Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial Dedication, Obama describes how America has developed the idea of being free and equal. I strongly agree with president Obama’s opinion that America has put in a lot of effort into becoming more fair and free. In my opinion, America has made multiple changes in order to become free because many of Martin Luther King Jr.’s hopes and dreams were achieved throughout the years; this is based on the speech “I Have a Dream” delivered by Dr. King. King states “With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.” This is explaining how …show more content…

Subsequently, many of King’s dreams, involving racial equality and liberty, became reality. Furthermore, I agree with Obama’s position that America is advancing in regards to equality and liberty because the poem “I, Too, Sing America” by Langston Hughes, describes how African Americans may have advocated for one another. In the poem, Hughes writes, “I am the darker brother. They send me to eat in the kitchen When company comes… Tomorrow… Nobody’ll dare Say to me, ‘Eat in the kitchen,’. . . I, too, am America.” In other words, the man represented in the poem is saying that he will not allow others to force him to do something that he does not want do; he also wants to make it known that he should be treated like every other American. Consequently, this proves how America has advanced in the area of equality and freedom given that minorities spoke up for their rights.
