Memories are a vital part of human life that can shape a person’s character for a brief period of time until they are forgotten. Core memories; however, are much more important as they can remain with someone throughout their lives. They are buried deep inside every single person and can reveal a lot of information. At the age of about seven or eight I remember waking on a crisp, winter morning. The air was cool and as I took a deep breath, I realized that it was just too quiet. My room was pleasantly dim with just enough daylight peeking through the blinds on the windows, but suddenly it all felt too dark and too cold. Normally when someone gets sick, they go to the doctor and they get better. However, that was not the case with me as I had mono and it stuck around longer than it was welcome. Mono normally goes away within a couple weeks, but mine lasted for six months. I was homebound for most of my sixth grade year and was absolutely miserable up until the point where I slept most of the day so I would not have to deal with the pain and uncomfortableness. During those six months, my immune system basically stopped working and I came down with walking pneumonia twice. That is also when I started carrying a tissue box around with me as I still do today. At one point, I almost died over bloodwork because my body could not put up with any more stress and pain. By the end of the six months, I could hardly eat anything as I would get very sick and ended up losing around forty pounds which worried my doctors and my family. I learned from those terrible six months that health is taken for granted and I will always be thankful that I am as healthy as I am. My tissue box is probably going to stay with me for a while unless I can beat it too, but it is kind of nice to have around. Who knows, maybe I will get a job with the Kleenex company designing tissue boxes and I will have my mono to thank for
