All they were considered to be good for was to have babies and take care of men’s needs. Men thought they can do whatever they wanted to do with women. Men mistreated woman badly. In 1790 women started to fight back to gain their freedom to have rights of their own. In the “Wife of Bath’s Tale”, a young knight came across a beautiful young maiden.
This shows the absurdity that lies in blaming one gender of the equation since it requires male and female to create new life. However, it was very common to engage in premarital sex and when no charges were made, some people married out of wedlock. In the 1900’s man tended to be dominant and feel more powerful than women and Evelin’s father was no exception. In that period in time men felt like they had control over women, and that women should be submissive towards their orders. This was proven after her dad used to take Eveline’s paycheck and prohibited her from seeing Frank, the guy she was courting. Nonetheless, the father could be nice toward his daughter, “She had been laid up for a day, he had read her out a ghost story and made her toast in the fire.” As the father was getting old he realized that he needed his daughter because she was mostly the breadwinner of the house, but also because she is the only one who takes care of him, which makes him selfish.
During this time, people believed that women were only good at cooking, cleaning, or nurturing their children and couldn’t do much else. Because people thought this way, women were uneducated unless they were in the upper class. Wealthy women would sometimes have private tutors that would teach them.
This is why women were believed to be unequal to men. Outside sources say that women were mostly free to do what they wanted until they got married. Unmarried women and widows were allowed to get jobs that didn’t need degrees in. Most women were expected to get married at younger ages. Those who didn’t get married went to work on farms or in people’s houses.
Despite all this discrimination, women still proved that they could contribute to their society. Women were important due to the fact they served the subordinate role to men, promoted the ideals of chivalry, and in special cases, they became important leaders. In the Middle Ages, women are considered to be inferior to the men. They served as the secondary role and their power were relatively minuscule compared to men. Depending on their social class, some women had more power than others.
Firstly, what was the women, in particular, in the eyes of husbands and fathers in the family? In early modern Europe, many people believe in that, the most appropriate place for women was the family which gives them certain responsibilities like obedient daughters, wives, and widows. Many books and theories included that women should marry and constitute their own family. Different societies view women in different lights. Therefore, a woman’s position is greatly different from one society to the other. The societies in question do not necessarily have to exist at the same time. Even in the same time frame, two societies could exist, where one treat women as equals to men, and another that treats women differently than men, whether better or worse. The societies in question are: Mesopotamia, Greece, China, Rome & Europe, and this essay aims to study different societies’ viewpoints on women, and to compare and contrast them against each other.

They were taught to be obedient to their husbands and were expected to run the household and raise children. Their role in the society, however, was much more complex, while some medieval women achieved a high level of equality with men. Over generations, the role of women in society has shifted and changed immensely, improving upon many aspects of rights and values that women have. The changes occurred gave women opportunities to provide ideas, to have the same rights as men, giving women freedom, leading to many contributions of many significant and valuable events. But from current roles of women being equal to those of men, how women stood in ancient society significantly differs and contrast with ours today. Throughout history, the role and significance of women were always outweighed by the dominance and influence of men. The role of women in ancient times varied throughout, depending on the place and area in the world, in which women had different roles and impacts on their own society.
