In act one, Willy becomes angered when he sees that his wife is mending her stockings, rather than throwing them away and getting new ones. The stockings are symbolic in two ways. They represent the true financial situation of Willy and his family, and how despite what Willy wants to believe about his said success as a salesman, they are tight on money. Linda is mending stockings, which is completely useless considering that stockings are cheap and therefore do not cost much and can easily get damaged.
