One major negative mental effect of children involved in divorce is problems dealing with anxiety. Research states that younger age children are more likely to be affected than older age children because they possibly may already see it happening and understand it more. In addition children who struggle mentally are often described as difficult, pushy, and in need of constant attention. Therefore, a child who struggles mentally may show characteristics of constant moodiness or dissatisfaction. For example, a child may complain about never feeling loved or never feeling cared for. Also, a child may show anger which may lead to them not wanting to play with other children. Furthermore, a child may refuse to attend school.

Developmental stages can also become a mental problem that expresses physically during divorce. Children who are close to preschooler age may struggle with the feeling of vast changes to their world and seem they are feeling abandoned. Also, a child may wish the divorce was not real or fear that they may never see their parents again. Not to mention, they might have strong feelings of anger, hatred, sadness, loneliness, or even guilt for the rest of their lives.
Lastly, another negative mental effect that is expressed physically of divorce can lead to problems with a child’s future relationships and marriage. The reason is growing up they saw how two people treat each other in a negative way and never saw any positive things in their parents’ marriage, therefore the child only knows how to argue, fight, and be dissatisfied with the other person.
