Obesity has become a major problem amongst teenagers. With the constant use of electronic devices such as smartphones, computers, and television, teens rarely exercise anymore. The resulting effects of being overweight can lead to severe mental health issues along with life threatening physical health issues. Exercising will get rid of those issues and can make teens feel better than they ever thought they could. The benefits that exercise could have on teens would change their lives for the better. First off, many teenagers experience a range of mental health issues as a result of not staying in shape and not exercising. One of the biggest issues is depression. According to the article “Mental Health Benefits of Exercise for Adolescents” written by Doctors Allison Williams and Taunya Tinsley, “A 2006 study showed higher levels of sport participation and physical activity were linked to lower levels of depression” (Williams and Tinsley, Ph.D.). One benefit is living longer. According to the article “Important to get teens involved with fitness” by Vince Faust, “Obese teens have a higher blood pressure, higher resting heart rate, and lower cardiac output than non-obese teens” (Faust). As a result, this can lead to the teens having a higher risk of having a heart attack, which can cause death. However, if the teens chose to exercise they could eliminate that risk and go on live a longer and healthier life. Also, “evidence shows that heart disease and many other serious illnesses can begin as early as age 10” (Faust). In order to prevent this from happening, it is best that teens exercise as soon as possible and do their best to stay in shape.
