One in four adults in the United States are experiencing mental illness every day. According to research, it shows that over 50% of adults will deal with mental health issues during their lifetime. Mental health counselors can also assist people experiencing substance abuse, self- esteem issues, grief, etc (Cherry, Mental). They may help you focus on your personal development by learning skills and coping abilities. Not only do counselors work with individuals, they also have the opportunity to work with families. Mental health counselors help families resolve complications between each other, and influence them to create stronger connections. It is more than required to have important knowledge of psychology, therapy, and counseling. Dealing with other people in this field, it is important to be skillful .This includes critical thinking skills, excellent listening skills, problem solving skills, social skills, and the ability to communicate effectively (Cherry, Mental). Not only do mental health counselors have to have certain skills, but they also need to be filled with compassion, empathy, and emotional intelligence. To maintain a good balance in their life, it is useful to have good stress management and emotional regulation abilities. This is prominent to have as mental health counselors tamper with their job and other responsibilities.
