Coming from the same website, it was also found that suicide was and still is the second leading cause of death among young people between the ages of 13 and 18. To shed even more light on this serious matter, it is estimated that 1 out of 4 to 5 teens have or will have suffered from mental illness by the time they are 25. Then on top of that, we now know that 10 out of 100,000 teens will today decide to end their life. What are we doing about this upsurge? What can we do about mental illness in adolescents? Mental Illness in adolescents is becoming a growing epidemic. Despite the alarming discoveries, many still choose not to educate themselves on the matter. This is a problem in itself because it gives way to stigma. Stigma and awful stereotypes that in turn, prevent the afflicted person from getting the assistance and care they need. Mental Illness is not always manifested in one’s physical well-being and environment. A lot of the times, it actually comes down to being a chemical imbalance that causes a person to feel, hear, see and experience things the way they do. With “de-stigmatizing” the end goal would be many of those affected by illness seeking help and intervention. With the assistance of doctors as well as healthy coping mechanisms, small group therapy, and medication, a safety net of support can be created to further ensure the mental and even physical prosperity of the affected person.
