Definition
Mentoring and coaching can be defined as one of the techniques used to develop individual’s skills and performances for the seek of career development.
Purpose
The purpose of coaching and mentoring is to help individuals grow and develop their skills within the organization by making an alignment between the organization’s goals and its employees’ professional development.
Desired outcomes:
Increase retention : when it comes to the organizational context, mentoring and coaching can help employees build loyalty towards the organizations they are working for. The key roles that a mentor/coach plays are:
Teacher: model behavior and provide information
Sponsor: refer the mentee/coachee to others, help him/her to open doors, and promote his/her talents
Cheerleader: inspire the mentee/coachee to achieve their goals, challenge him/her, and encourage him/her in the process of his/her development Counselor: listen, advise, and clarify.
Friend: accept the mentee/coachee for who he/she is and engage in a relationship that is more personal by supporting him/her either in his/her professional or personal development
Stakeholders involved:
Supervisors: keep track of all what the mentors/coaches are doing.
Mentees/coachees: show commitment to their mentors/coachers, be good listeners, learn from their mentors/coaches experiences
Top management: design the mentoring program

In addition to that, a coordinator of the team should be also selected. This management team will be the one responsible of the documentation of the mentor/coach’s development, developing the evaluation plan, training and supervising mentors/coaches, maintaining policies and records, etc.
The procedures and different policies should be established. By establishing these procedures and policies all participants in the mentoring program will be asked to follow them. An instruction guide for mentors/coaches and mentees/coachees should be developed (United state office of personnel management, 2008).
Professional development and staff training should be implemented. Provide development activities such as career development seminars.
A mentoring agreement should be developed. This agreement should include both mentors/coaches and mentees/coachees signatures, a confidentiality clause, all the roles and responsibilities of both mentors/coaches and mentees/coachees, and the date of completion of the action
