Almost everyone in the book approves and admires the idea of eliminating privacy. However, Mercer (the voice of reason and the pariah in the novel) frames the concept differently. Mortified by this new concept, Mercer shares his thoughts on the notion of no privacy to Mae. He believes the Circle’s monitoring of personal data is unethical and the digital setups are addictive. Mercer addresses his views to Mae in hopes to un-brainwash her need to always interact through the media. The snack analogy denotes the addiction into something that will only get worse.
