Should one change themselves to fit in? William Shakespeare was a writer who wrote poems and plays that are still famous today. In Romeo and Juliet, one of his most famous plays, Shakespeare wrote many memorable characters. One of the most impactful characters is Mercutio because he doesn’t try to change who he is. He is known for his jokes and being good with words. Mercutio is the most practical and admirable character in Romeo and Juliet because he gives good advice, he is expressive, and he is a loyal friend. For example, when Romeo is hung up on Rosaline, someone he knows he can’t be with, his friends console him and try to assure him that there are other people out there. Mercutio says, “You are a lover. Borrow Cupid’s wings/and soar with them above a common bound.” (I.iv.18-19.) He helps convince Romeo to go out to a party so he can try and move on. Tybalt, a member of the Capulet family, sends a letter asking for Romeo. He is mad that Romeo and his friends showed up to the Capulets’ party at their house without an invitation.
