The absurd love story and the horrid death’s of Romeo and Juliet are thought to be in the hands of a variety of people. The play, Romeo and Juliet, began with fate bringing the two lovers together. Shortly after came marriage, banishment, and eventually their deaths. Their love was kept hidden from their feuding families and only a few trusted individuals knew about it. Friar Lawrence and fate are ultimately responsible for Romeo and Juliet’s untimely deaths. Some people may think that Mercutio is to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. They think this because he encouraged Romeo to go to the Capulet party, wanted Romeo to move on, and is the reason Romeo murdered Tybalt and got banished. However, these claims are invalid for countless reasons. All Mercutio was trying to do was uplift his friend and encourage him to stop being sad about Rosaline. It was fate’s fault that Rosaline didn’t love Romeo back and that he met Juliet at the party. Another reason that fate is to blame is because they were born into two feuding families. It was just a coincidence that the two lovers were born into the long-standing Capulet and Montague family feud. Fate struck again when Friar John couldn’t deliver an important letter, he stated “I couldn’t go to Mantua because I was stuck there.” (Shakespeare 257) The house he was in unluckily became quarantined, causing him to be unable to deliver the letter to Romeo and inevitably resulting in their deaths.
