Shara Varenhorst Varenhorst 1 Mr. Klug 11 May, 2018 Placing Blame in the Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet In tragedies the first action that’s taken, is finding who is is responsible. Who will be punished for what has happened? But who was to blame for the demise and horrible tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Maybe if Rosealine didn’t break Romeo’s heart, and Mercutio and Benvolio didn’t try cheering him up by inviting him to a party; Romeo and Juliet wouldn’t have met death days later. There are many to blame in William Shakespeare’s writing of Romeo and Juliet; however, Mercutio is the most to blame. There are many to blame in the story Romeo and Juliet, but if Romeo never met Juliet maybe the domino effect of bad events to take their lives wouldn't have happened. Mercutio, Romeo’s hot headed friend convinces him to go the the party, after he has doubts. He tells him to find a new lady to replace his heartbreak Rosealine. Perhaps their secret marriage would’ve worked out if Romeo had not been banished. Romeo in fact would not have been banished if he wasn’t defending Mercutio and his honor. Tybalt, already stirred from seeing his foes, the Montagues, is challenged to a duel after insulting Romeo by Mercutio. “Art thou a villain”- Tybalt Act 3 scene 1 and “Tybalt, you ratcatcher, will you walk?”- Mercutio Act 3 scene 1. Romeo was a peacekeeper and had no intention to fight until after Mercutio dies by the hands of Tybalt. Mercutio’s death rages Romeo and he commits a crime, a crime punishable by the banishment of Verona. This creates conflict between Romeo and Juliet and makes things
