Just Mercy is a memoir that amasses and distinguishes the legal accounts of an activist lawyer’s [Bryan Stevenson] struggle against legal injustice. Stevenson was born into a low-income family living in a racially segregated community in Delaware. He made it to Harvard Law School after successfully graduating from Eastern College that is present day Eastern University. In his legal practice, Bryan Stevenson started representing poor clients in Georgia and later in Alabama, where he became a co-founder of the Equal Justice Initiative.
In Bryan Stevenson’s “Just Mercy,” there is an underlying sense of hope that is seen in spurts through the constant stories of injustice and unfairness that take place. Throughout the book there are multiple people that are wrongly condemned and have to suffer on the dreaded death row. All of the inmates of the row know they will eventually be executed, but only a select few stay positive and give the reader a sense of hope in such a negative situation. Mr. Jenkins is one of those men. The mentally ill man was in and out of foster care as a child, and his terrible experiences lead to more serious brain damage.
In the book Just Mercy, by Bryon Stevenson, he shares the story of his upbringing as a lawyer and company Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Alabama. Through his career, he was able to understand the full extent of mercy and its ability to bring out people’s humanity. Additionally, Stevenson argues how people who act upon prejudiced beliefs are just as broken as those who have been condemned to life in prison without parole and on death row, because they have all been defeated by a sense of hopelessness and animosity within their own lives. In my critique, I describe my new found understanding of the cruelty behind the death penalty. Moreso, the trauma and brutality it brings to all the players involved, especially to those who are placed on death row.
Compassion can be defined as "sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others. " It is an essential piece to a more united world. A book that stresses this idea is just mercy. In the book just mercy, lawyer Bryan Stevenson emphasizes the importance of compassion towards others by using strong examples of injustice and personal perspectives, ultimately moving the readers to show compassion to those around them.

The novel Just Mercy, by Bryan Stevenson, presents its story through first-person narratives that explore the identities of multiple death row inmates through the perspective of a lawyer, Bryan Stevenson. Most of these inmates are given names and backstories, such as Walter McMillan, an innocent African American man who was accused and sentenced to death for the murder of a young white woman. Through these personal experiences, Stevenson can relay his message of equality and justice to his audience as he explores the inmates' humanity which is presented through their emotions and their kindness toward Stevenson throughout the novel. Edina St. Vincent Millay’s poem “Oh, Oh You Will Be Sorry for that Word” is a lyric poem in which a woman is arguing with a man that started when he said something derogatory about her reading such a large book when she is a delicate creature. The woman is obviously upset about the fact her supposed friend/lover/husband behaved badly towards her. It is a Shakespearian Sonnet because the rhyme scheme is ABAB CDCD EFEF GG with a meter that most likely resembles trochaic. The only line that does not fit into the meter is line three. The poem has Masculine Rhyme because the words that rhyme do so with the last syllable.

The poem "Kindness" by Naomi Shihab Nye speaks about how you experience kindness and what it really is. The main point in this poem is that in order to experience people's kindness you need to experience hurt, sorrow, and loneliness. The author says that when you loose everything and have no one or thing that when kindness comes along it lifts you up "and then goes with you everywhere/ like a shadow or a friend" (33-34). When portraying this message the author uses a sad but hopeful tone to send the message she wants to say. This tone helps portray the message because you can feel how sad someone is when they are lonely and they have nothing.
June Jordan’s poem, “Poem about my rights” is about a woman who is describing her experiences and the unremittent concern for basic human rights for males and females. It is a personal and emotional poem about her view of the world and how change is needed. Although majority of the poem is written about how Jordan’s basic rights were not given, the poem also includes sections at which the reader sees the need for equal basic rights for both male and female is needed. This essay will comprise of my response to the poem, both as a poem and an oral performance. Throughout the poem Jordan uses repetition and in the oral performance uses her voice to enhance her message and feelings.
June Jordan’s poetry is known for its immediacy and accessibility as well as its interest in identity and the representation of personal experiences. Her poetry is often deeply autobiographical, political and often displays a radical, globalized notion of solidarity amongst the worlds oppressed. “Poem about my rights” by the poet, June Jordan can be seen as spoken word poetry rather than page poetry where oral performance and repetition are used to convey her feelings and messages to the listeners. Poetry can be divided into two groups; written poetry and spoken word poetry. Written poetry, also known as page poetry, is written and is analysed by the reader.
