Lewis and Clark traveled to the northern parts of the area. They met with different native tribes the Mandan tribe, Hirata, Teton Sioux, and Oto. They met French trappers, they also met a French trapper whose wife named Sacagawea, was of the Shoshone tribe. She was great with speaking to different tribes. The Nez Perce Lewis, Clark and the corps of discovery came across the Nez Perce when they were on the Clearwater river, at the time the crew was famished, or starving and tired, The Nez Perce fed them.
This land was the Louisiana land which the president Thomas Jefferson had recently bought. During this expedition they found out many things environment. For example, they found new plants and animals. In addition to this they also made maps with exact locations so people could travel. Their objective was just to find a connected waterway from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean but on the journey they found these other things.
It was thomas jefferson's newly owned land and his will to explore it he decided to send explorers across it in which he named the corps of discovery. The heads of the group were Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. When starting the expedition meriwether lewis bought many gifts for the indians such as beads, coats, fabrics, and hats that could hopefully help convince the indians to be relatively good friends with the explorers and our country. When the expedition started exploring in 1803 they started down the Mississippi river on three ships and didn’t run into any american indians. as they traveled they learned about many new things such as minerals and plants so far unknown to science and eventually sent a care package back to president Jefferson on one of the three ships to show him all the new scientific discoveries that the expedition had made.
They were sent off to explore the Louisiana Purchase and the Pacific Northwest. This exploration played a major role in the exploration of America as a whole. They travelled around 8,000 miles in less than two and a half years with a four dozen men entourage. The expedition was brought to the attention by President Thomas Jefferson. January 18th, 1803, he secretly told Congress to find and pay an officer $2,500 to explore the Missouri river, meet Indians, expand the fur trade, and locate the Northwest Passage.
Throughout 1803, Jefferson had talked with Meriwether Lewis, a young army veteran and his private secretary, about the Louisiana Territory. Jefferson wanted Lewis to lead a group of people out into the west to explore as much land as he could. Lewis, an adventurer at heart, accepted Jefferson’s request, and in early 1804, went to Philadelphia to recruit the men he wanted to accompany him on his journey. Among the men that were recruited was William Clark, an old friend of Lewis and the man that would share command of the band of explorers with Lewis. Together, Lewis and Clark decided to call their group “The Corps of Discovery.”
LEWIS & CLARK EXPEDITION After the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 President Jefferson appointed his own private secretary Meriwether Lewis as Commander in charge to explore the unknown territory. Lewis then invited William Clark is former superior officer to be his Co-commander. They set out from Camp Dubois and were to explore the new territory, affirm the sovereignty of the US, find a water way to the Pacific, and establish trade with the Natives. Lewis and Clark commanded the Corps of Discovery which had 33 people, 26 being soldiers to include Sergeant Charles Floyd the only person to die on the expedition, one being Clark’s personal slave named York who would be given his freedom at the end of the expedition and one being Sacagawea

The Lewis and Clark expedition was a turning point in American history. It radically expanded our current knowledge of what used to be the Louisiana Territory. When thinking of this expedition, most forget that many people accompanied Lewis and Clark. Each member had important jobs and roles that may have drastically increased the aqusition of knowledge. There were even cases of incredulous misbehavior with appropriate punishments, and of course, along the way deaths occurred.
Jefferson purchased the territory because he wanted to have control of the Port of New Orleans. The Spanish had previous control over it before Napoleon and they would not let the U.S. use the port for trade. Jefferson did not know the other territory he purchased so he sent out several expeditions to explore the new territory. He commissioned one of the most famously known expeditions, the Lewis and Clark expedition.
One of Thomas Jefferson’s best achievements was buying the Louisiana Purchase at 15 million dollars in 1803. This land is more than 820,000 square miles long. Jefferson then commissioned Lewis and Clark to explore the uncharted lan. At the time, most Americans lived within 50 miles of the Atlantic Ocean.
