Meriwether Lewis Essay Meriwether Lewis was born on August 18, 1774. He was the leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and also the governor of Louisiana. The purpose of the expedition was to discover the land of the Louisiana territory and to find a route to the Pacific Ocean. As the governor of Louisiana, Lewis had many responsibilities, like transporting important documents. Which just so happens to be what he was doing, at the time he died. Lewis died on October 11, 1809. The real question is how Lewis died? Suicide or murder? The answer is murder, but it is documented as a suicide. The purpose of this essay is to validate that Lewis did not kill himself, he was murdered. Using the evidence from Exhibit B, investigators have come to the conclusion that Meriwether Lewis could not have shot himself in the head. The gun he would’ve used would’ve been way too powerful to shoot himself once in the head, then the stomach. The investigators say that the gun was too powerful for him to survive two shots.
