Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia are two of the greatest if not the two greatest civilizations to have existed in history. They influenced all other civilization to come after them with all the invention they created, as well as the marvels they built to never be forgotten. A comparison between the two will show how a like and how distinct their differences were. Ancient Egypt which lies in what is today known as Egypt in the Nile Valley, in the north east of Africa. By 3000 BC, the unified kingdom of Egypt inhabited the entire Nile Valley north of a chain of rapids known as the 1st Cataract. When the empire was at its greatest, in 1250 BC, Ancient Egypt occupied the land in all directions from the Syrian coast in the north, the Red Sea in the east, all the way down the Nile Valley to Nubia in the south (Time Maps). Egypt’s location greatly influenced its culture as well as its lifestyle. Their entire civilization relied and survived off of the Nile. Farmers developed irrigation methods to control the flow of the water, so that crops could grow in both the rainy and dry seasons. The valley was fertile and rich, which created surpluses of crops. The name is used for the area where the Tigris and Euphrates run through, roughly in what is now modern day Iraq, Iran, Syria, and the southern part of Turkey. South of modern Bagdad, the muddy plains of the rivers were called the land of Sumer and Akkad in the third millennium (Heise). Sumer is the most southern part, while the land of Akkad is the area around modern Bagdad, where the Euphrates and Tigris are closest to each other. In the second millennium both sections were called Babylonia
