In Kafka’s The Metamorphosis, when Gregor turned into a bug he was suddenly worthless. He was not able to work, so he could not provide for his family and no one wanted to be around him because of his appearance. Similarly, in Frankenstein, the monster was looked at differently because his appearance was out of the ordinary too. These are great examples of discrimination that happens in our world today. The two stories demonstrate othering on how they were treated and their own feelings towards the situation. In Frankenstein, Victor’s monster had just left his family he was with, or spying on, because they rejected him when they saw his appearance. He was on his way to Geneva looking for Victor when he watched a girl slip into the rapid current of the river. The monster ran over quickly to save the girl. Once he pulled her out safely, another girl came running behind and once she saw the monster she pulled her friend’s arm away from the monster. They both ran off without a thank you or acknowledgment that the monster had just saved the little girl. After, Gregor finally manages to open the door with his mouth, his family was mortified with what they saw their family member had turned into. His mother faints, his father becomes angry and sad at the same time, and the clerk begins to back away in fear. Gregor is still able to understand what they are saying and experiencing, but he is very confused and upset as well by the situation. His father ends up shutting the door on him and leaving him locked in his room. Gregor was being isolated from his family and other civilization because he was suddenly a repelling creature. Gregor was also considered abject after his metamorphosis by casting him away in the room so they or others could not see
