The pain class of drugs makes up a huge portion of the global pharmaceutical market, specifically 300 million prescriptions, just second to cancer medication. This market is worth about $24 billion and a large portion of this market is made up of opioids1. Raw opium from the opioid plant was being consumed for pain purposes for hundreds of years from the early 1500’s to the early 1800’s. It was not until 1804 when German pharmacist, Friedrich Sertürner, isolated the alkaloid, Morphine, from the opium poppy plant with the purpose to make a drug with a safer alternative than consuming raw opium. Not only was Morphine the first opioid drug to be isolated straight from the opium poppy

Addictiveness is the biggest problem clinics and the addicts face in the stage of rehabilitation, and to reduce the desire for drugs, the best is to slowly reduce the amount of intake of drug by the user which can be done by using a substitute drug, Methadone. Dreamland also firmly explains why Methadone is more of an effective treatment for the addicts, and is less harmful to the daily users. Methadone was created by Nazi Germany, but after World War II, Methadone was introduced to United States as a possible aide to heroin addicts by Dr. Vincent Dole, an addiction specialist at the Rockefeller Institute. Methadone has its unique characteristic of lower addiction rate than other opioids; Methadone is the only opiate that addicts did not demand the increase in doses (Sam Quinones
Vivitrol is the Key to Recovery Vivitrol is the name of the once monthly, extended-release injectable form of the drug Naltrexone that is administered to people suffering from opiate and alcohol addiction following complete detoxification. Naltrexone is known as an opiate receptor antagonist, which means it essentially blocks the effects of opiates and heroin (Syed and Keating 851). The recommended dose is 380mg intramuscularly every four weeks following 7-10 days of detoxification. This detoxification is determined by a negative urine drug screen prior to administration (Syed and Keating 858). When the effects of the opiates are blocked, the patient cannot feel the effects, therefore it decreases the desire and cravings, thus leading to extended periods of sobriety or abstinence according to Syed and Keating (851).

In 1919, Akira Ogata synthesized crystallized MA by reducing ephedrine using red phosphorous and iodine, providing the basis for production of the drug on a larger scale (Figure 1) [2]. The two main types of treatment are pharmacotherapies and behavioral therapy. Pharmacotherapies is the use of medications such as Methadone and Buprenorphine to help addicts recover from opioid addiction. These medications work by blocking the serotonin receptors in the brain, this causes the symptoms of withdrawal to be less severe and more manageable. Roughly 40 to 60% of patients respond well to pharmacotherapy. Individuals who use drug therapy to aid their recovery are often required to take the medications for the remainder of their lives.

Introduction Our neighborhood looked still as the sun’s dusky glow bathed the room in gentle light. Despite the incessant shrieks of children at play, the holiness of the moment muffled all the noise from the streets. Angie, my bedridden wife with disabilities, was the only other person at home. She repeatedly peered at me, concerned to know whether everything was all right. The wall clock revealed over 36 hours had passed since I took any food or water.
