The loved one will experience severe and damaging consequences; he or she will change forever unless it is put to a stop. Many people suffer from addiction; however, sometimes people can get addicted to things that may or may not be harmful. Methamphetamine, otherwise known as meth, is a highly addictive stimulant that causes harm to those who use it compulsively and excessively. Based on the memoir, “Beautiful Boy,” written by David Sheff, his son Nic, who is addicted to meth, grew distant from his family(Sheff 48-305). Nic did not avoid his family solely by his own decision, but he was influenced by the formidable drug, meth. It scrambled his mind, making his decisions irrational and careless. Additionally, Nic did not care for his well being; he just wanted to do meth even though he tried to stop(Sheff 125-205). Nic is almost fully responsible for all of his actions, but meth is the source and his actions are the proof of the effects of meth. The capabilities of meth are truly terrifying; it can and will alter a person’s mind that will make them seem like a stranger. Similarly, the article, “What is methamphetamine?,” it states, “In studies of people who used methamphetamine over the long term, severe changes also affected areas of the brain involved with emotion and memory”(NIDA). This is the reason why students, whether in college of high school, are failing or dropping out. This causes distress and worries from their families and friends; Nic’s actions reveal one of the truly horrifying effects of meth.
