My grand-aunt dawns a bullet in the center of her front door as a result of the Mexican American War. The war started on April 25th in 1846. Both the Mexicans and Americans had their fair share of disrespect within a span of two years. It was then settled with the peace treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Although the United States war against Mexico resulted in the gaining of America’s most valuable land, the war itself was not warranted due to the miscommunication of Texas, manifest destiny and the expansion of slavery, and the actions of the U.S. government. When the reasons of the Mexican American War are looked over, it is clearly seen that the war was unjustifiable because the American settlers in Texas initiated conflicts with Mexico. When the American settlers came into texas, Mexico set up a system of laws that were to be followed, but instead the Americans decided to disobey these new rules. According to Rafael Antonio Manchola, a tejano (Mexican living in texas), “...the Anglo-American colonists...are continually demonstrating that they refuse to follow our laws, unless it is convenient for them.” Given this evidence it is easy to see that having a mindset like that would not work for a situation that …show more content…

The United States and Mexico were already in a bad place but the several occasions of unfair doings added on to the tension. The letter written by Joshua Giddings to the U.S. congress reads, “The president obviously intended to involve us in a war with Mexico.” When the army was in the United States they could have no violence towards Mexico but the president expected General Taylor to find Mexican citizens in the U.S. According to Joshua Giddings’ response to the U.S. congress debate on war with Mexico, the Americans wish to extend slavery.
