Drug Cartels have been around since the early 1920's. These cartels have stricken fear into everyone who lives in the same country as them and even some that live in neighboring countries. There are many drug cartels, large and small, that operate out of Central and South America. However Mexico has the worst problem with Cartels. The Mexican government’s lack of control over the cartels have spread fear and worry throughout the country. Civilians have now taken matters into their own hands and are forming local militia to fight against the cartels. A Mexican reporter stated that, “Lack of confidence in the police, as well as in judicial institutions, has raised citizens’ perceptions of insecurity and, in some cases, has led to the creation of self-defense militias like in the state of Michoacán, where thousands of armed militiamen have taken back numerous cities held by the cartels amid an uneasy stand-off with the government,”(Estevez). Now the government not only has to send money to stop the cartels but they have to spend even more money on the military to make sure that their civilians do not fight against the cartels and get hurt, or worse die (Knowledge). A study conducted by the Canacintra National Manufacturing Industry Chamber recently estimated that up to 10,000 small and medium enterprises had shut down during 2010 in the areas most badly affected by the drugs violence (Miglierini). Cartels control large territories that Mexico uses to make money. For example if someone wants to drill for oil in the oil fields, they are in danger of getting attacked by cartels who use those fields as a mean of transporting drugs across the border. Mexico’s government needs to protect their citizens more as well because they are being exploited and threatened by cartels. The Economy of Mexico is not getting any better, and it’s because of the government’s lack of action taken against the cartels.
