Between 1830 and 1860, Manifest Destiny and territorial expansion did more to divide America than it did to unite. While it was not the main for the divide of America that was shown in the South’s secession from the United States, it brought up many issues that ultimately led to the Civil War. These issues are shown in the annexation of Texas, the Mexican-American War that resulted from that, and the Kansas-Nebraska Act. Until 1836, the area of Texas was controlled by the Republic of Mexico and was a distant and irrelevant piece of land in most American’s minds. A few Americans had emigrated there from the South at the invitation of the Mexican government, but not many.
What is Justification? According to Merriam Webster justification is “the action of showing something to be right or reasonable.” I do not believe that the United States decision to wage war with Mexico was either right or reasonable. My reasons are that Mexico was provoked by the Americans because they didn’t respect the border, my second reason is that Mexico had a larger claim over the land according to Document C, and my third is that the United States didn’t engage in war for the right reasons, the United States engaged in war for the fulfillment of the Manifest Destiny.
In 1820 the countries boarder extended a lot. They bought a lot of land, but America had a hard time in buying Texas. They couldn't buy it without becomming Catholic, learn the Spanish language and become a Mexican citizen. This is one of the reasons for this to be controversial. As a response on this, more than three hundred American families with slaves came to the country.
Was the United States Justified in Going to War With Mexico? Texas declared itself an Independent Nation in 1836. In 1845 the United States annexed Texas. There was a war between the U.S and Mexico in 1846-1848, Texas and Mexico got into a disagreement over which border would be Texas’s, the U.S wanted the Rio Grande and Mexico wanted the Nueces River.
Mexico ended slavery when it broke away from Spain. When Americans started moving into it’s land it brought slavery back. Slaves were forced to move all around the continent, slaves were defiant, and they brought rebellion with them. Slaves were forced to move over the country. Even if slaves did not want to move they were forced to move with their masters.
Manifest destiny also affected the relationship with Mexico. Several factors led to the Mexican- American War in 1846. The factors were that the U.S citizens were moving into California and Mexico. Since there were many revolutions happening in Mexico throughout this time period the Mexican government was not able to protect the U.S citizens in this region. Another factor was that Mexico was upset that Texas declared independence from them and then the U. S annexed Texas in 1845.
Following the Mexican-American War, the conflict of 1846 through 1848 caused by Texas gaining its independence from Mexico, opinions and actions of the American citizens and government concerning slavery drastically changed. Beginning from the wishy-washiness of the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, American ideas and values evolved - proven through the Emancipation Proclamation of 1865. Through the seventeen different presidents coming into power during the time frame of 1787 to 1865, the judgments of slavery exceptionally differed from each man in power, having a large impact on the current situation of slavery during their time in office. Since the Texans did not like the way Mexico treated them, why would they want to promote slavery? No matter what year the constitutions were written in there is were no justification for slavery. It is ashame that individuals, local or higher government could lead Texans to believe that slavery was constitutional. On the other side, how could those Texans not realize that slavery was wrong?
The Spaniards were wrong for keeping the Indians as their slaves. The Spaniards also had no right to take away what religious believes the Indians had. Two documents, the first one was by Las Casas who was a Dominican priest, he documented how the Spaniards treated the Indians as slaves because the Indians did not want to convert to Christianity. The second document was by Josepha who was a Spanish-speaking Indian who documented the Native Americans taking away Christianity from the Spaniards. The Spaniard took away all the freedom from the Indians, because the Spaniards want the Indians to convert to Christianity, the Indians did not want to convert so the Spaniards took everything from the Indians, and used the Indians as slaves.
The first cause is Mexican resentment over the annexation of Texas. Mexico had never recognized Texas's independence and therefore refused to accept the American action of making it a state. B. The second cause is the longing of many expansionists in the United States for California and New Mexico. Some envied the rich, fertile lands of California and its superb harbors, while others affectionately recalled the profitable trade along the Santa Fe Trail.
The Mexican-American War marked an enormous symbolic impact for both nations which changed people’s lives. There’s many similarities and differences between these two countries, the combat that began during 1846 between Mexicans and Americans has brought catastrophe and teared many families apart. The war commenced because Mexico claimed the Nueces River and its northeastern boarder while Americans demanded the Rio Grande River. Overall they had problems with land property, Mexico started the battle first and launch fire on April 25, 1846. This is when all the problems and fight’s begin and how Mexican’s and American’s became great enemies that can’t stand each other.
We have common ground with Mexico, we both declared independence, Mexico freed itself from spain. Mexican leaders were aware of the emptiness of their northern lands, one of the ways to make money was to allow settlers from the US, they were encouraging people from the US to settle on their lands in Texas; however, this was not going as smoothly as they thought it would, Mexico was Catholic, anti-slavery, and wanted to keep texans under their laws. However, the Americans were not all against slavery.
Unlike the viewpoint of Americans, Mexicans did not view the annexation of Texas and the Mexican-American War justifiable. Americans did not have the right to invade in Mexico. Many politicians in the United States proclaimed that they should expand their territory by the annexation of Texas and Mexico. Americans justified the annexation with the idea of “Manifest Destiny”, an expression of idealized justification on the part of Americans that they have the God-given right to civilize all the nations.
The United States has always displayed a rich diverse culture, even before it gained its independence from Great Britain in 1776. European colonists were not the first groups of people to have lived in the America, as many indigenous groups have occupied this land hundreds of years before colonization. These indigenous groups played a major role in the makeup of Latin America and Caribbean, which is what made the Americas so diverse during the time of colonization.
