In the book “Mexican Whiteboy¨- by Matt de la Peña some of the biggest symbols that stood out to me were stickball, mental health and a hawk because there was a common occurring symbol that continuously popped up in the book. I chose these symbols because they are all connected with Danny and effect him a different way The first symbol that I would be explaining is stickball because In the book the main character Danny plays and talks about stickball a lot. Danny enjoys playing stickball so much that he hopes to be in a team but to him stickball is not only a sport it's his passion even when danny went to a new place the only way he felt like he was fitting in was when he was playing stickball and that's the reason why I chose stickball as a symbol is because even when he was sad and depressed he was still thinking about stickball and how he didn’t enter the team he wanted to, on page 41 and 42 it says “This had been Danny’s spot since Coach Sullivan pulled him aside after the last day of tryouts-in front of everybody-patted him on the back and tried to let him down easy.
Que Vivan Los Tamales analyses the history of Mexico's evolving national identity via food. Mexican cuisine has changed dramatically from the the era of the aztecs, to the period of Spanish colonialism through to the Porfiriato dictatorship. Through these periods we we see food being used in a manner to unify the nation and create a national united identity. Below I will argue how the country attempted to unify its people though cuisine. When the Spanish conquered Mexico, they tried to impose old world techniques and spices onto the Mexicans.
The Alamo is a symbol of Texas pride and Mexicans Independence. It was built in the1740's as a Spanish mission. The remembrance of the Alamo has brought both cultures viewing the history towards their different point of view in proclaiming the war and state. The American's point of view, they were settled first in Texas then the Mexicans tried to fight for the state wanting to claim the territory. The Mexicans wanted to proclaim the state since it was very close to the border.
When you say America, some people think of Texas. It is a very American state there are…….. Surprisingly, Mexico used to own the territory of Texas, but in 1836 Texas gained its independence. Significantly, these two countries got caught up in many disputes. Each had different ideas where the border between Mexico and America existed.
The American Bald Eagle was not uncommon to people around the world although not many had encountered a real and living one. It was because the image of the eagle was featured everywhere, especially to those related to the United States. The bald eagle was a metaphor for the United States in many occasions. The image of the eagle was featured on the Great Seal of the United States and the Seal of the President States. It could also be found on logos of various departments of the federal government, federal documents, letterheads, uniforms of soldiers and embassy and even on the one-dollar bill.
“Remember the Alamo!” In 1821 Mexico won the independence from Spain, then when Mexican started to let people into their country saying that they would give the people free land to settle on and the Americans were settlement for new land after become a country of their own. Mexico started to become overpopulated as a country then the tension grew between American settlers and the Mexican government or the Mexican who lived in the Texas area known as “Tejanos”. Then the Mexicans government made a law that says that no more American settlers were allowed in the Texas area because it belonged to the mexican government.
The Mexican-American War marked an enormous symbolic impact for both nations which changed people’s lives. There’s many similarities and differences between these two countries, the combat that began during 1846 between Mexicans and Americans has brought catastrophe and teared many families apart. The war commenced because Mexico claimed the Nueces River and its northeastern boarder while Americans demanded the Rio Grande River. Overall they had problems with land property, Mexico started the battle first and launch fire on April 25, 1846. This is when all the problems and fight’s begin and how Mexican’s and American’s became great enemies that can’t stand each other.
In the article “The Virgin of Guadalupe: A Mexican National Symbol” by Eric R. Wolf, the facts are given about the history of the symbol as well as the importance that it plays in the lives of the people of Mexico. This Wolf applies the agnostic approach in his article by the language that he uses. He does not attempt to persuade or dissuade from believing in the Virgin of Guadalupe. Wolf starts out by explaining that the terms he uses do no represent the Mexican people as a whole, “In this paper, I should like to discuss this [Virgin of Guadalupe] Mexican master symbol, and the ideology which surrounds it. In making use of the term ‘master symbol,’ I do not wish to imply that belief in the symbol is common to all Mexicans” (Wolf 2).
To begin to unravel the controversy that lies within the flag, one must understand the history. This flag was developed when the thirteen colonies were trying to obtain freedom from the British during the American Revolution. Benjamin Franklin can be connected with this flag because in 1751, he wrote a commentary to “thank the Brits for their policy of sending convicted felons to America [and] American colonists should send rattlesnakes to England” (“Rattlesnake Flags & Early American Snake Symbolism”). In 1775, a snake symbol arose in areas all over the colonies. It is unknown who exactly started the use of the rattlesnake however, it is known when it was used in a combat.
In the year 1821, Mexico had won independence from Spain. They allowed for Americans to settle in Texas, they were given the land that no Mexicans had yet to claim. The only catch was for Americans to become Mexican citizens, learn Spanish and convert to Catholicism. They never really became “Mexican”, they kept speaking English and were still the same Americans as before arriving in Texas.
The Chinese Room Argument was a thought experiment presented by an American philosopher by the name of John Searle. The Chinese room argument is a concept that refutes the idea of a strong artificial intelligence also known as Strong Al. Strong Ai is “the view that an appropriately programmed digital computer capable of passing the Turing test would thereby have mental states and a mind in the same sense in which human beings have mental states and a mind” (Searle, 2005). However the opposing view of weak Al is distinguished by the view that the computer is a useful tool in studying the mind, just as it is a useful tool in other disciplines ranging from molecular biology to weather prediction. In the following essay I will explain in detail
