Michael created a plan to go home and save his family, and for this plan to succeed he had to persevere. Michael was not discouraged for every set back and this allowed him to be optimistic and come closer to his goal instead of giving up. Michael doesn’t allow situations to faze him this is because he learned to endure it and stay strong this is reviled when Michael says, “It was a challenge, but it was saving me and I knew I could live through it-that I could endure it […] That word endure applied to like my whole life. I hardened my heart all right. I stopped crying in about the fifth grade (Michael, 57).” This endurance allowed Michael to stay positive even during hard times and figure out a plan to combat any tragedy. He shows his persevering character when he gets robbed out of seven hundred fifty dollars and gets, when he tries to get back home even though he has nothing, and when he escapes the police showed his perseverance. At first to escape he crates a plan to escape the Cliffside Dentation Center by hiding in a garbage truck, then hijacking a tractor-trailer rig this is show on the flyer on page one seventy two, “They speculate the boy either walked off the property and was picked up possibly, that he fled by hiding in a garbage truck. According to state police, the boy may have hijacked a tractor trailer […] (Cummings, 127).” He also shows this intelligent and resourceful character when he finds a canoe and uses it to escape the police. It also was shown when he was robbed and he got his money back by threatening Woody the man who stole his money. Him not turning himself in and allowing others to step on him by forming tactics showed that you can over come you circumstances and surpass the struggles life puts on your
