What was Michael’s legacy? Michael Jackson was the “King of Pop.” From his songs “Thriller” to “I’ll be there”, everybody has loved his music. The MTV Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award was started in 1984. Every year a recipient is awarded the award. The award is meant to celebrate “forerunners in the music video sphere”. Still today they hand out this award. Michael’s music will live forever. It is still being played proudly today from commercials to parties. How did Michael get their? Michael Jackson was born in Gary, Indiana on August 29, 1958. When he was a child his was part of his family’s band called the Jackson 5. He performed as the lead singer. Michael’s dad wanted him and his brothers to be successful so his dad made them practice to hours to clean up their work. At first they performed gigs and even recorded one of their own but it failed. The Jackson 5 moved to working up to being opening acts for R&B artists such as James Brown and Gladys Knight. Reports say that Gladys Knights told Berry Gordy about them. In 1968 he signed them to his label. Soon after that the Jackson 5 moved to L.A and started working on their singing and dancing with their dad as their manager. They ended up living with Gordy and Diana Ross. In August 1969 the Jackson 5 was introduced to the music industry. Later they came out with their first album. Their song “I want you back” hit the number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in January 1970. When Michael was 13 he launched his solo career in addition to working with the Jackson 5. In 1971 his song “Got to be there” made the charts. Michael and the Jackson 5 became so popular a cartoon tv show ran from 1971 to 1973.
