Around the world, sociologists have researched on human behavior, observing people’s daily decisions and choices, which ultimately causes an effect to the rest of the society. The sociological perspective is how sociologists see the world, a perspective on human behavior and the connections between the behavior of the individual people and structures of society in which we live in. Although there is an overarching view in the sociological perspective, there still lies the different levels and interpretations of it. In the subtopics, the film talks about the color barrier and homophobia that occurs in sports. There has been many cases where athletes like Muhammad Ali and Jackie Robinson took the worst of their situations and turned it into an inspiring story to their fans and later generations. Although we would all love for this to happen to all athletes, there are superstars like Michael Jordan who would rather just stay an athlete who would not risk their career to raise awareness for something they believe in. This is one of the reasons why many male athletes reveal their sexual orientation after their retirement; they are scared they will not get drafted because of how they identify themselves. Men who subscribe to inclusive masculinity also slightly strengthen heteromasculinity (by privileging heterosexuality over homosexuality) but they seem to privilege heterosexuality. Athletes like to think that since they are gay or bisexual, it will affect their performance. Although this seems a bit homophobic, this quality in humans have been passed on for years because of their influence. People sometimes do not notice actually, when they use “You hit like a girl” as an insult to someone. Did they expect the girl to be a weakling automatically? After adapting to this phrase, not only football players, but thousands of other athletes still continue to belittle teammates or opponents if they participate in something that stands in the way of their “masculinity”. Since athletes are in an environment where they are influenced by their teammates to act a certain way, they are afraid to speak up. This is the power of social psychology.
