My chosen designer for this assignment is Michael Kors, who was actually born as Karl Anderson Jr., on August 9, 1959. He was born in Long Island, New York; but later moved to New York City. Kors’ name was changed because of his mom’s marriage to his step-father. His mom gave him the option to change his first name, also. She told him, “You’re getting a new last name, so why don’t you pick a new first name?” Kors stated. Michael and David were his mother’s favorite names. So he chose Michael as his first name and David as his middle name. Michael David Kors, being his name ever since. Kors modeled as a child, appearing in television commercials for the cereal brand, Lucky Charms, and Charmin’ paper towels. He also pursued acting lessons, but stopped doing them, so he could follow his dreams to become a fashion designer, at the age of fourteen. He then enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, but left nine months later when he was offered to sell his own designs at Lothars. It was here that Dawn Mello, former fashion director at Bergdorf Goodman, gave him the opportunity to show his collection to the buyer’s at Bergdorf Goodman.
