Mass shootings occur around the world essentially every day. Based on a 2015 study the mass shootings in the United States occur about 209 days out of a year and over half of the shooters are not legal gun holders. Question: Will terrorist attacks and mass shooting ever decrease based on our government leaders’ action? In the “Case for Torture” by Michael Levin, the author talks about the need to consider torture as a possibility to obtain necessary information from future terrorists that threaten innocent lives. Levin says potential victims’ rights are more important than a terrorist’s right to due process and thus allowing people to die is more immortal than torture. The four moms surveyed said yes to torture to get their children back. Levin does not believe in torture as a form of punishment, but the use torture as a way to save innocent lives. Another point discussed by Levin is preventing a military attack or assassinating a ruler such as Hitler to save lives is a must. The concern of torturing the wrong person is usually not an issue, according to Levin due to the recognition the terrorist group wants and will go on television to proclaim to the world that they are the responsible party of the threat. At the end of the article Levin ends with torture needs to be considered and discussed now so that terrorists do not hold us hostage, but we are prepared with an option to save innocent lives. As the author indicates in his article torture is something that needs to be considered as a way to gain the necessary information from a terrorist. Usually in these cases the terrorist or the kidnaper is known, and information must be obtained before harm is brought to innocent lives. It is important that these criminals know that torture will be conducted when necessary and perhaps detour terrorist from these crimes and hurting these innocent people. Therefore, in this Levin’s second opinion I disagree if we show that small acts of terrorist are not properly being taken care of then that just opens it up for more to take part in harmful actions. In class we discussed the United States due process system and why it is necessary for our nation. A couple of reasons as to why we have due process are to establish clear guilt and abusive gouts. Some examples of the types of torture faced for the terrorists are: psychological, some physical which could lead to death, and waterboarding is one way as well.
